World Breastfeeding Week

2014

Breastfeeding: A Winning Goal for Life!

WBW 2014 Objectives

  1. To provide information about the Millennium Development goals (MDGs) and how they relate to breastfeeding and infant and young child feeding.
  2. To showcase the progress made so far and the key gaps in breastfeeding.
  3. To call attention to the importance of STEPING UP actions to protect, promote and support breastfeeding as a key intervention in the MDGs and in the post 2015 era.
  4. To stimulate interest among young people of both genders to see the relevance of breastfeeding in today’s changing world.

World Breastfeeding Week (August 1 - 7, 2014) began twenty years ago by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), a global network of individuals and organizations, including the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Maryland has gone a step further and will use the entire month (August 1st - 31st) to celebrate, educate and raise awareness about this year's theme: BREASTFEEDING: A Winning Goal - for Life! This theme highlights supporting mother's breastfeeding as a goal similar to this year's Football World Cup, where moving forward is hitting the goal.

There are number of events sponsored by Maryland WIC throughout the state for families, health professionals, educators and the general public. Please join us at one of the following events:
