When looking at the health of Marylanders, support for breast feeding, as proposed by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), is the right thing to do and follows the U.S. Surgeon General's call to action to support breast feeding. We disagree with Dr. Kenneth Hoffman's opinions about the recommendations coming from DHMH ("Promotion of breast feeding goes too far," Feb. 14).

We are excited to announce the launch of Public Citizen's campaign to stop the marketing of infant formula in healthcare facilities.

As you know, one of the most significant factors limiting breastfeeding, and thereby harming the health of both babies and mothers, is the aggressive marketing of infant formula directly to consumers. In the United States, the vast majority of hospitals distribute industry-sponsored "discharge bags," which contain formula samples, to new mothers. The benefits of breastfeeding are widely acknowledged. The government should rein in formula companies and even well-meaning hospitals that nudge new moms toward formula. By now, the overwhelming benefit of breastfeeding babies to improve their health, and sometimes to save their lives, is universally acknowledged, even by the companies that produce formula.

CDC recommends that all health care providers use WHO growth charts for all infants-2 year olds

September 10, 2010

The World Health Organization (WHO) released a new international growth standard statistical distribution in 2006, which describes the growth of children ages 0 to 59 months living in environments believed to support what WHO researchers view as optimal growth of children in six countries throughout the world, including the U.S. The distribution shows how infants and young children grow under these conditions, rather than how they do grow in environments that may not support optimal growth.
